Small
Discoveries Preschool is located in the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church at
517 SW Des Moines Street, Ankeny, Iowa. Preschool students use the northeast
door to the educational wing that is accessible by SW Elm Street.
Small Discoveries Preschool begins after Labor Day and ends before Memorial
Day. School is recessed for Thanksgiving Christmas and spring vacation.
The three-year-old session meets on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:00 - 11:30
am. The four-year-old sessions meet on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday with
the option of a morning session from 9:00 - 11:30 am or an afternoon session
from 12:30 - 3:00 PM.
Transportation is not provided to or from school. A class list will be
provided to facilitate in the arrangement of car pools.
Small Discoveries Preschool has a staff of experienced teachers with
a teacher/student ratio of one to ten for the four-year-old classes and
one to eight for the three-year-old class. The director and head teachers
have degrees in early childhood or elementary education. All teachers are
members of professional organizations and attend conferences and/or workshops
for continuing education and professional development.
Parent-teacher conferences are scheduled in the spring. Parents or teachers
may request a conference at any time. Parents are always welcome to visit
or assist in the classroom.
Small Discoveries Preschool is affiliated with Holy Trinity Lutheran
Church. A formal religious curriculum is not utilized, Christian holidays
are observed. Prayer is also shared at the beginning of group time and before
the snack.
Small Discoveries Preschool provides an educational program in a friendly
caring and stimulating atmosphere. The developmentally appropriate learning
experiences foster the social, emotional, physical and intellectual development
of the child.
Preschool earning experiences include opportunities to:
- Participate in large and small group experiences that help the child
become a happy, social, self-confident person.
- Learn to get along with others and develop a respect for others' rights
as well as their own.
- Learn to express their feelings and emotions appropriately.
- Develop a mathematical understanding.
- Learn first-hand about the world around them.
- Develop large and small muscle coordination and physical skills.
- Discover how things work through various Science experiences.
- Encourage creative expression and appreciation for the arts.
- Learn about appropriate health habits and safety procedures.
- Develop a healthy attitude toward education with a real zest for learning.

It is intended that the Small Discoveries Preschool program
provides appropriate, enriching experiences that develop a readiness for
kindergarten rather than a duplication of the kindergarten program.
Small
Discoveries Preschool admits students of any race, color, national and ethic
origin to all the rights, privileges, programs and activities generally
accorded or mode available to students at the school, It does not discriminate
on the basis of race, color, national or ethnic origin in administration
of its educational policies, admission policies, scholarship and Loan programs
and athletic and other school-administered programs.
Small Discoveries Preschool is licensed by the Department of Human Services
of the State of Iowa. All facilities, programs and staff comply with or
exceed the standards set by that department.
Admission Policies:
- Children must be three years of age by September 15 to be enrolled
in the three-year-old session.
- Children must be four years of age by September 13 to be enrolled
in a four-year-old session.
- All children must be completely toilet trained by the start of school.
- Each child must have a medical examination and provide the preschool
with a copy of the medical report and immunization card prior to being
admitted each year.
- Parents must sign a consent for medical care form for use in emergencies.
A consent for field trips and transportation consent are also requested.
- Orientation will be the first day of school. A parent or other adult
must be present for the orientation. This lessens the apprehension of
the children and allows them to move into the group setting with more
ease.
- A maximum of 24 students will be admitted to the three-year-old session.
- A maximum of 30 students will be admitted to the four-year-old morning
session.
- A maximum of 20 students will be admitted to the four-year-old afternoon
session.
